Greek shipyards are gaining a strong voice in Brussels
A significant milestone for the domestic shipbuilding and ship repair industry is the official accession of the Union of Greek Shipyards (EEN) to Waterborne, the European Technology Platform for Maritime Transport.
This development marks Greece’s dynamic return to the forefront of European developments in the fields of shipbuilding technology, the green transition and innovation.
The inclusion of the EEN substantially strengthens the representation of the Southern Shipbuilding Pillar at European level. At the same time, it creates strong channels of cooperation to strengthen and expand the capacity of the European industrial base in shipbuilding, ship repair, ship outfitting and ship modernisation.
Greek shipyards are now gaining a strong voice and presence in Brussels, with the Hellenic Shipbuilders’ Association (EEN) at the centre of developments and actively involved in shaping European technological and research priorities for the sector and the ecosystem surrounding it.
Statement by Jaap Gebraad – Secretary-General of Waterborne

«The Hellenic Shipbuilders’ Association significantly strengthens the representation of shipyards and equipment manufacturers within our organisation. The participation of the Hellenic Shipbuilders’ Association provides strong links to initiatives that strengthen and expand the capacity of the European industrial base to build, repair, fit out and modernise ships. Aligning our Technology Roadmaps with the revitalisation of the Greek shipbuilding ecosystem will further enhance the credibility of these roadmaps.
»We look forward to working together to chart a course towards a competitive, resilient and sustainable shipping sector in the EU."
Statement by Panos Xenokostas – President of the Hellenic Shipbuilders’ Association

«The inclusion of the Hellenic Shipbuilders’ Association in the European Waterborne technology platform marks a milestone for the Greek shipbuilding and ship repair industry and confirms the dynamismrevival.”.
Through our participation, Greek shipyards are establishing an institutional and substantive presence in Brussels, actively contributing to the development of European technology roadmaps for the green and digital transition of maritime transport.
The energy transition represents both the greatest challenge and the greatest opportunity for the shipping industry. It will be implemented in shipyards through the construction and retrofitting of new-technology vessels capable of using alternative fuels such as LNG, ammonia and methanol, and through the technological retrofitting of the existing fleet.
At this critical juncture, Greece must play a leading role. Not only as the world’s leading shipping power, but also as Europe’s Southern Shipbuilding Hub, making a substantial contribution to its energy security and technological autonomy.
»We are ready to contribute to the creation of a strong and competitive shipbuilding ecosystem in Europe, demonstrating that Greece is making a strong comeback on the global shipbuilding scene.’
